Filed late or not at all

What Missing the Deadline Actually Costs

It depends entirely on one thing: whether you owe. Most tax advertising blurs that. We will not.

If you owe tax

The failure to file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. That is ten times the failure to pay penalty, and interest accrues on top. Filing on time matters more than paying on time. Even if you cannot pay, file: it cuts the penalty dramatically.

If you are owed a refund

There is no penalty and nobody is coming after you. But your money sits with the IRS earning you nothing, and the refund is forfeited entirely if you never file. Some credits also require a filed return to claim at all.

Federal penalties described generally. California penalties and interest are separate, and your situation may differ. We will tell you exactly where you stand on a fifteen minute call, at no charge.
